When you are ready to build your shed roof you must keep in mind especially if you live where you get snow fall, that your roof must be able to withstand some very heavy loads, and if you do build it properly then your shed roof will do it's job and protect the contents of your shed for years to come.

When you purchase your set of shed plans then you should check them to see if they adhere to the local building codes, particularly the roof design because this is something you do not want to scrimp on, and the lumber store can even cut and assemble your trusses for you.

When the roof trusses are delivered to your house, the first thing you need to do is mark the top plate of the shed wall with pencil marks every 24 inch centers and the same on the opposite wall and then you can start putting up the trusses using nails to toe nail them in place, when they are all secured then nail on your 5/8 inch plywood and cover with tar paper and finally your shingles.

One very important thing to remember is safety is the number one thing when working on a roof, never try to sheet a roof on a windy day and never on your own, you should even have help putting up the trusses,a gust of wind knocking you off a roof while holding a 5/8' sheet of plywood is not a pleasant experience.

If you live in an area with heavy snow fall then the best thing to do is use a design that has a very steep pitch which will make snow removal much easier. Accumulated snow on a roof can be thousands of pounds that causes a lot of stress on your shed roof and the walls of your shed as well.

When installing your roof shingles, choose good quality shingles that has a 20 year warranty, plus a good idea is to try and match the color of the shingles on the roof of your house which will be more pleasing to the eye and if you belong to a building association then don't find out the hard way that this is something you have to do.

Your shed roof is the most important part of your shed building project and requires more precision when assembling especially the trusses, if you are having trouble building the trusses then have the lumber store build them for you.
